Tech Support
Aug 30th
I’m not entirely too sure how (or when) it happened, but I’ve become our department’s go-to person when it comes to tech queries. We do have an IT department but getting them to look at anything requires setting up a work ticket which then gets ignored for weeks on end.
Recently, I had to ask our network guy to look into why one of our printers wouldn’t connect to our network. It took over two months and many follow up emails on my part before he came downstairs and had a look at the problem. Needless to say, if someone’s having an Excel, Word or content management system problem, they ask me first.
I’m fine with that. Most of the time, it’s something I know how to do. The other times, I have to Google it and then I end up learning something new. I know that Larry doesn’t like it when I spend time not working on something that’s directly related to my job. To avoid him getting his knickers in a twist, I usually help when Larry’s on lunch, in a meeting or it’s close to my lunch time.
Anyway…
Talked
Aug 25th
I talked to my boss today. I asked him on our instant messenger if he had a minute and he replied that he did so I walked into his office, closed the door and told him I wanted to talk to him about our conversation yesterday.
“Which one?” he asked.
I told him which and I said that I was surprised by his reaction to my having gone ahead and posted the page. “You seemed very surprised that I did that, and it made me think that maybe you felt I shouldn’t have done that.”
The Talk

I’ve worked with Larry for three years now. In that time, he’s impressed me with his fairness and his intelligence. He’s also irritated me beyond belief with his cheapness and nit-picky ways. Today, his obsessive need to control everything really irritated me. So much so that I think I’m going to have to talk to him about it.
Some background:
We (Larry, Lights, J-Mac and I) are working on a project together. This project involves dealing with our clients. A component of the project was to be posted online for our clients to access – we had set ourselves a deadline of last Friday. Since it was online, most of the work fell to me; which was fine.
Larry had booked last Thursday, Friday and yesterday off. He hoped to have everything ready to post online before he left on Wednesday but that didn’t happen as there were too many components to deal with. When he left, he imparted on me his strong desire to have the material up by the end of the week.
More Professional

I wore my new glasses at work today. It’s funny how some people react, or rather, don’t. I ran into Co-worker 2 (CW2) while washing my coffee cup and I told her that if she thought me angelic before, I’d really appear angelic with my glasses on.
Once I put them on, I ventured over to CW2’s desk and she gasped. “You look like Julia Roberts!” She could tell by the look on my face that I wasn’t happy with the comparison. “What? You don’t like her?”
Just then, CW2’s boss (affectionately referred to as Communications bitch) walked over to me and said, “Did you do something different to your hair?” I thought she was being sarcastic.
I Can Haz Signz?
Aug 10th
I work with some really brilliant people. These are people whose office walls are adorned with degrees and diplomas and whose names are followed by letters indicating several designations. These folks can read texts and write white papers and present dry material to groups of equally qualified people.
The problem with these people? They can barely make it through the most rudimentary tasks without needing help. I’ve noticed more and more instructional signs going up around the office. “Please note, this bin is for garbage,” was written on a sign that went up on the large garbage bin last week. Detailed printing (and copying) instructions are taped to the top of the Xerox.
The absolute best sign, however, has to be the one found behind the coffee maker:
