Short Week, Long Weekend
Jul 30th
I’m thinking someone either e-mailed Mr. Beatnik, or he clued in that wasting all of that time last week was not professional in the least. I wish I could say he redeemed himself last night by picking up the pace and showing us more than one tool – although that Pen tool sure is handy. Unfortunately, he blew any chance he had at redemption when someone asked him what the difference was between vector-based art and pixel-based art and he was unable to answer. “I’m totally stumped, no one’s ever asked me that before,” he stammered. He just stood there, trying to formulate a response and couldn’t come up with one.
Even though he was early and kept his hat off of his head, his not being able to answer that very basic question solidified my opinion of him – that is, I think he’s a total and complete tool. I’m hopeful that I won’t have him for an instructor once this class wraps up in a few weeks. There are web sites out there that are more useful than he is.

I am not looking forward to class tonight. This could be attributed to the fact that I’ve been taking courses without much of a break since last January, but that’s not the cause of my lethargy. The course is learning Illustrator, a program I’ve never worked in before until the class started a few weeks ago. Do I find it too hard? Is the teacher going too fast? Hardly. If the teacher went any slower, we’d be learning on typewriters.
When I first saw the teacher, I knew the experience was not going to be a rewarding one. He stumbled in late the first night, with his baggy shorts that were falling off of his ass, his grungy ball cap and his honkin’ nose ring. He didn’t teach that night, he just went over the course outline and gave us a few minutes to introduce ourselves. The entire time, he never took his hat off and he often stumbled around jumping from one topic to another. I felt like I was watching a cast-off from the Pineapple Express movie. “Dude, where’s your car?” I wanted to ask.
Flashy Pants

I wrapped up my Flash class last night. I’ve been taking a fair bit of web and design classes in the last year, CSS, JavaScript, PhotoShop, Web Design amongst others. This class was my first foray into Flash. What a foray it was.
I had never seen the program’s interface, nor did I know what a frame, tween or guided layer were. The teacher was the same guy I’d had for the PhotoShop class I took last year. He’s an interesting guy, your typical artsy, scattered, beatnik type. He told us the story one night of how he was leaving class behind two students and one student turned to his friend and said, “do you think he’s stoned?” It’s easy to think that the teacher would be stoned because he’s so aloof and unpredictable. Regardless of his quirkiness, the man knows his stuff.
Ha!

I love how people who can’t even plug a USB key into a computer try to pass off a web page that was obviously built in Dreamweaver as their own.
Loves it!
“Oh, that? I just did that off the seat of my pants, I just used a little CSS is all…”
Mmhmm, sure you did. Sure you did.
Just my (bitchy) opinion

I’m thinking that if you don’t know how to create a new folder or know the difference between Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer, than you shouldn’t really be taking a web design course.
Mmmmkay.
