Day Without a Gay
Dec 9th
Ever hear the joke that if homosexuality is a sickness, then people should call in gay to work? “Hi boss, sorry, can’t come in today, I’ve got a case of the gay. I might be in tomorrow, depending on how gay I am.” Well guess what tomorrow is?
It’s the first ever Day without a Gay. As a form of protest against the passing of Proposition 8 in California and other anti-gay pieces of legislation, gay folks are going to stay home from work tomorrow. The idea behind tomorrow being that gays should refrain from contributing to the economy.
While I’d love to participate, I can’t. But I will do my best not to buy anything. I’ve already made my lunch for tomorrow, so I won’t be buying that, I should be spend-free.
Speaking of gay stuff, I caught this article earlier today. Two lesbians go to pick up their child from school and are approached by a man who says “which one of you two men spoke to my kid?” His aggressiveness escalates to calling them fucking dykes, spitting on them and physically attacking them. It was announced today that the accused will not be charged with a hate crime because “it did not meet the narrow definition of a hate crime.” Because the attack didn’t advocate genocide and because the attacker did not incited others to join him in the assault, the police felt they couldn’t charge him with a hate crime.
How comforting to know that the laws which are set to protect us are so carefully crafted that they barely protect us at all.
Equal citizens in the eyes of the law, indeed.

Everything I wanted to say in my last post but couldn’t quite express through my anger, is saids so eloquently here by Keith Olbermann:

Apparently, California is the place to be if you’re a chicken. I don’t just mean someone who’s easily afraid of things. I mean an actual chicken. You see, dear friends, the fine citizens of the sunshine state have voted to pass a proposition into law which would (according to Wikipedia):
…prohibit the confinement of certain farm animals in a manner that does not allow them to turn around freely, lie down, stand up, and fully extend their limbs. The measure deals with three types of confinement: veal crates, battery cages, and sow gestation crates.
I’m all for animal rights. Lord knows if anyone ever tried to harm the little head or the littler head, I’d likely end up in jail on assault charges.
8 against 8

While our attention here in Canada of late has been on the election that wrapped up last week, there is something happening down in California that I think all us homo’s need to be aware of. For some reason, which I don’t really understand, the people of California are being given the chance to vote on a piece of legislation which would effectively nullify the rights of gays and lesbians to marry. The same right the supreme court granted just a few months ago. Why the supreme court decision isn’t final, is beyond the understanding of this Canadian ‘mo.
From what I’ve been seeing in blogs and polls, the pro-prop 8 folks have raised a huge amount of money – $10 million more than the no folks.
This type of vote scares me. I can see Stephen Harper pulling something similar here. Although, I doubt he’d even put it to a vote, he would just take away our rights without a second thought. Thankfully, he only has a minority government. Its hard to believe that the right to marry is something that even has to be legislated or granted by courts. Being given the right only to have it taken away months later is beyond ridiculous, especially in a country as developed as the United States.
Today was the launch of the 8 against 8 campaign. 8 lesbian bloggers (who I believe all live in California) have launched the campaign in the hopes of raising awareness and donations for the no folks. This vote is important, not just to the people of California, but for all of us.
The 8 bloggers are:
- Grace Chu and Grace Rosen from Grace the Spot
- Lori Hahn from Hahn at Home
- Kelly Leszczynski from The Lesbian Lifestyle
- Dorothy Snarker from Dorothy Surrenders

If you can and wish to donate, you may do so at the 8 against 8 web site.
