Helping Hand

I’m getting me a bitch tomorrow. Sounds exciting, doesn’t it? I don’t mean I’m getting a dog tomorrow, merely someone who will be coming in on a contract basis to help me at work.
We’re starting a new project where we’ll be building an entire new section on one of the web sites I look after. With the amount on my plate lately, the work day would need to be extended to 8pm for me to be able to give the new project the attention it needs.
Mr. G has told me that he doesn’t want me taken off of the web site since I’ve done a great job with it (his words), I’ve been with it since the beginning and I know everything there is to know about it. Mr. G was aware of how little time there is lately and how pissy Larry gets when I spend time on projects not directly under his sphere of responsibility, so he came up with a compromise.

Not having a (functional) computer is turning out to be an interesting experiment. I’m finding myself pretty bored as a large part of my daily routine has changed. In the morning, I have my coffee while checking e-mail and catching up with the new items in my reader. In the evening, I surf, maybe blog, tweet and search for new music. Maybe it’s pathetic to admit just how much of my time is tied to a computer, but I don’t know many people who aren’t as tied to their computer as I am to mine.
I’m busying myself by reading and watching the first season of Damages. I finished reading The Book of Negroes tonight by Lawrence Hill. It was a really good read, not overly descriptive, well researched and very touching.
I’m enjoying Damages, not as much as other shows like Dexter or Nurse Jackie, but I’ve only seen a handful of episodes thus far. It reminds me of 24, in that there’s always a twist when you least expect it. I’m sure I’ll come to like it more as the season progresses and the storyline develops a bit more.
Fitting

I thought it was pretty fitting that I got this e-mail today that reminded me I shouldn’t really complain about my job.

BlackBerry Aggravation

My boss is going to drive me to drink. Maybe it’s just PMS and whacked-out hormones, but he is irritating the hell out of me the last few days.
He and I were both in that training the last few weeks. During the training, he would often interrupt the instructor with irrelevant/repetitive questions. If he found a spelling mistake in one of the set of instructions we were using, he’d make a stink about it. The instructor handled it pretty well but I could tell he was as annoyed as I was.
Last week, Larry (the boss) let me know that our IT department had notified him that they would be upgrading his BlackBerry. Not everyone at the company gets a BlackBerry, but managers at Larry’s level do. I knew as soon as he told me about his new device that it was going to be causing me headaches.
More Bananas

I’ve been pretty damn busy at work the last few weeks. Lots of long days and some late nights at the office did not leave me wanting to sit in front of the computer to blog upon getting home.
The project which has kept me so busy at work had to do with our content management system (CMS). I’d mentioned before how much of a dinosaur it was; it’s clunky, takes too long to process things and is anything but user friendly. The good news was that the company’s IT department was in the midst of purchasing a new (and hopefully better) system.
The new system was being rolled out this spring. As a web publisher, it would be up to me to move the content of the web sites I maintain from the old system to the new. None of this was news to me; I had been in touch with the webmaster and was fully aware that he had scheduled me in for training in mid-March and I’d have a few weeks of his time for the migration and then he’d be on to helping the next publisher.
