Dinners and Dogs

9 Mar

I’ve written about work more than I’ve meant to lately. How’s about some tales of fun nights spent with friends?

After two cancellations on our part, S and I were finally able to get together for dinner with our friends Christine and T. Both S and I had felt pretty bad that our stomach issues had resulted in our plans being postponed, especially since we wanted to celebrate Christine’s 29th birthday. This past Friday, we went out to a happening Sushi restaurant in our ‘hood.

S and I arrived at 7:30 and only two tables in the restaurant were occupied. Given a choice of seating, S and I elected to sit in the booth in the window. “Does this place ever get busy?” S asked me as we settled in to our seats. Not long after, we were joined by Christine and T.

Christine was as bubbly as ever as we chatted about what we’ve been up to the last few weeks. Christine is a regular reader of the blog so she came to dinner with a few questions for me regarding the breakfast with executives I had participated in earlier in the week. She and S exchanged stories of frustrating HR personnel at their respective companies and then I answered her questions about the breakfast initiative at the office.

Take it like a Champ

27 Feb

I won’t go into detail about how crappy I felt yesterday. I’ll start with this morning; I woke up feeling much better. I wasn’t 100%, but I was close.

S had made brunch plans with her former colleague Cynthia for this morning. I was going to go to, but I thought it best that I stay home. S got up early and got herself ready. I didn’t get up until close to nine and started the day off by taking the pup out for her walk. It was pretty slushy out with the mild temperatures melting the snow we got yesterday. The gal pal was not happy with having to wear her booties, especially since they were getting wet in all of the puddles. It was a short walk as she didn’t want to be out there.

Back home, S came up from the basement, just about ready. We talked a bit about how I was feeling and Cynthia’s visit. “Are you sure you don’t want to come?” S asked me.

“Nah, I probably shouldn’t. Besides, I haven’t even showered yet,” I replied. We carried on, I enjoying my coffee and S getting dressed.

Olympic Commentary

25 Feb

The Olympics are on all day long here; the games are on the TV’s at work during the day and the regular primetime line-up has been pre-empted for the games. It’s getting a bit tiring; I’m on Olympics overload. I miss the murder mysteries at night. Thank goodness that the Law & Order series are in syndication.

It’s not all bad, though. With the non-stop coverage comes interesting and often impromptu commentary. Here are some of the funniest ones that I’ve heard the last two weeks:

Charlie, at work talking about the play of Martin Brodeur in Sunday’s hockey loss to the US:
[In her deep Irish accent]: He looked like he was playing tennis, he did. I don’t even play hockey and I know he should’ve stayed in the net.

Several of the girls were gathered around the TV set during a women’s curling match:
Natalie: Is Mr. Dreamy Blue Eyes playing?
Me: No, this is the women.
Other co-worker: I know who you’re talking about!
Yet another co-worker: He’s a fireman.
And on and on it went over this guy.

Of course, the most memorable commentary has come from S.

Sickly S

23 Feb

This weekend was a really subdued one for S and I. We had plans to attend poker in celebration of Christine’s birthday on Friday night, but S’s stomach troubles flared up again on Friday afternoon. “I’m feeling nauseous,” she wrote me on my Blackberry mid-afternoon.

As time progressed, she felt worse, so much so that she left work early. Upon getting home, it was clear to her that she would not be going out that evening. I got home not long after she did and could tell from her pale face that she felt like death warmed over. I didn’t feel right about leaving S alone; not when she felt so nauseous. I wrote Christine and T on their phones and apologized for our absence. Both S and I felt so bad about cancelling; especially at such a late hour.

S decided to head downstairs to be close to the bathroom. I know how she likes to be alone when she doesn’t feel well so I didn’t follow her. I stayed upstairs on the main level and searched for Wordpress themes. About half an hour after S went to lie down, I went and checked on her. Not surprisingly, she was out cold.

Chicken Soup, Minus the Chicken

17 Feb

S has had a rough couple of days. She felt pretty crappy for most of the weekend but Sunday through to yesterday was pretty bad. S rarely takes time off of work, but she was in no shape to go in yesterday so she stayed home. She didn’t know what the cause was, if it was a stomach bug or if she’d eaten something off. Regardless of the cause, she was not faring too well.

Hoping to help her feel better, I made chicken soup for dinner on Monday night. (It was a long weekend here due to the Family Day holiday.) S didn’t have very much of her soup since her stomach was too unsettled.

While I was at work yesterday, I wrote her on her Blackberry to ask her what she felt like having for dinner. I was up for making soup again; if not chicken, I could look up a different recipe to try. S said that soup was fine and she was okay with having chicken again.
