Saturday Shenanigans

14 Dec

S and I have another four day weekend as we took Friday and today off in our attempts to use up vacation days before the end of the year. It’s been a pretty low-key weekend except for Saturday, which was totally bonkers.

The shenanigans started when our friend, Stacy, the dog groomer arrived to groom the gal pal. She had loaded all of her equipment onto the front porch so when she knocked, it was quicker for her to bring everything inside at once. In addition to grooming the dog, she also cuts the cat’s nails because quite frankly, we’d likely injure ourselves if we tried to do it.

Everything was going along fine; the dog was being groomed in the kitchen, S was getting ready and I was working on the computer. Stacy let me know that she was finishing up with the pup, so I went in search of the cat. She hates having her nails cuts so whenever she sees Stacy, she hides. The last time, we had to struggle with getting her out from under the couch in the basement.

Thinking she would be down there again, I began my search there. There was no sign of her. I looked under the basement stairs but didn’t see her there either. I had a quick look around the bookcases and storage boxes thinking she’d curled up somewhere but didn’t find her.

Scrambling and Miscues

10 Oct

We had our lesbian neighbours over for wine and appetizers last night. I think the night went well but S thinks we won’t be seeing them again. Its’ not that things went horribly wrong, quite the opposite. Upon their arrival, S gave them a tour of the house upon their arrival while I put the warm appetizers in the oven.

With the tour over, we chatted about the similarities and differences between our two houses. While the warm appetizers were baking, we brought out the cheese, crackers, shrimp and wine. We chatted about the neighbourhood, our jobs and families and all of the other stuff that people usually talk about when getting to know each other.

Around nine, they said they should be going since they had a friend coming in from out of town who would be staying with them for the weekend. We walked them out and said good-night. As soon as they were out of earshot, S turned to me and said, “Well, we won’t be seeing them again any time soon.”

21 May

On weekdays, S gets up about an hour before me. I usually hear the alarm go off and sometimes hear her coaxing the gal pal into the bed as she gets up. Most of the time, I lay there half asleep, half awake and let all of this go on before drifting back into sleep for the extra hour.

Last night, the alarm went off and I vaguely heard S get up out of the bed and the gal pal climb into the spot S had just vacated. I think I fell back asleep pretty quickly, but the next thing I knew, S was talking to me. “Baby,” she whispered, “can you tell me what time it is?”

Regular Days

13 May

My friend Christine wrote an excellent blog post which is no surprise since her posts are always very sharp, witty and interesting.

Regular days are happy days if you’re lucky.

The cat had another peeing incident the other night. I had to go a few days without my transit pass. Work has been kind of monotanous lately.

I have my health. I have S, my love. I have my home, my furry kids, my family and a job to go to every day. So yes, regular days are happy days.

Birthday BBQ and A Day for Moms

10 May

Phew, what a whirlwind weekend. We knew it’d be a busy one since we were hosting P’s birthday get together on Saturday and then spending our Sunday doing the Mother’s day thing. Knowing that you’ll be busy and then actually being busy are two different things.

Things got started on Friday night when S and I went to Costco to pick up some steaks and salmon to grill on the BBQ. We took our empty propane tank with us and hoped we’d find somewhere to fill it. We were pleasantly surprised to find out that there was a refill station at the Costco. S is not a fan of propane tanks; she never goes near the BBQ when it’s on and didn’t want anything to do with removing the tank. The entire time it was in the car, S kept glancing back at in the space behind my seat. “Maybe we should have read the instructions before putting in the car,” she said. “It’s not going to blow up, is it?” she asked a few minutes later. She’s so cute.

After Costco, we hit the supermarket to pick up some remaining items and then rushed home before the skies opened up. We got home just as it started to rain and I quickly set up the propane tank before going into the house. It was after nine by the time we had everything put away and we still hadn’t had dinner. I figured we’d just have cereal but when we were putting things away in the freezer, S had caught sight of leftover pasta that was in there. “I kinda want that pasta for dinner,” she said.
