One gay gals' musings and observations while travelling on the streetcar
“It’s just a guideline”
We’re big fans of Renee’s Poppy Seed dressing in our home. We especially like it on baby spinach salad. Last night, I was making dinner, spinach salad included and S began looking in the fridge for the dressing. Both of us were pretty sure we had gotten some on our last trip to the grocery store but we couldn’t find it.
“Maybe it’s in the pantry?” I asked. “Never mind, it needs to be refrigerated, it wouldn’t be in there.”
“Oh, it is in here,” S said opening up the pantry cupboard.
“I guess we’re not having salad tonight,” I quipped.
“Do you think it’s bad?” S asked, opening up the jar. She tasted some of the dressing and announced that it didn’t taste funny. “Try some.”
“You’re just trying to get out of your presentation!” I joked. (S has to give a presentation she’s not looking forward to later this week.)
“The thought did cross my mind,” she said.
I tried some of the dressing and it tasted fine. “What are the ingredients?” I asked looking out the jar. S was looking in the fridge for other dressings and found that we didn’t have any.
“There aren’t any eggs or mayo in it, I think the refrigeration stuff is just a guideline,” S said. I handed her the jar of dressing while I got the rest of dinner ready. She then proceeded to dump a whole lot of it into the salad bowl. She was really throwing caution to the wind!
All was well the rest of the evening, until we went to bed. “I don’t feel so good,” S said, holding her stomach.
“That’s what happens when you have dressing that’s been in the pantry for a week!” I replied.
“Do you think that’s it?” she asked.
“Guess we’ll find out,” I joked.
“How do you feel?”
“I’m ok, for now,” I answered.
As we got into bed, I called out to the puppy. “Kid, I hope you don’t wake up an orphan tomorrow.”
Turns out, S woke up feeling better and the pup’s still got both of her mommies. Guess it was just a guideline, after all.

I will not eat anything that is past the best before date but
I am overly cautious — have you seen this site: http://www.stilltasty.com? You’ll like it.

I think it takes a few days to kick in.

My stomach is so puny, I am way overcautious about eating things that might be even NEARING expiration or lacking refrigeration. Karlene, OTOH, has an iron stomach. Not that you needed that information. LOL

@Christine, we’re pretty cautious too but it didn’t smell or taste off so we figured we’d be okay. Plus, there wasn’t any dairy in the dressing so we didn’t think it’d gone bad.
I hadn’t heard of that site, but I’ve added it to my bookmarks.
@Sage, funny you should say, S woke up not feeling so great today. She thinks it’s what she had for lunch yesterday that caused it though.
@Syd, Both of us have pretty sensitive stomachs so we’re pretty particular about food that might be bad/expired. Karlene sounds like my dad, that man’s got an iron stomach.
