Grumblings and the Grapevine
There’s something going on at work. There are a few things going on, I’m sure. It appears that whatever is in the works is largely tied to our fiscal year end, which we are fast approaching.
There’s a lot of buzz about what will happen when the three women who are currently on maternity leave return this summer. The economic slow-down has begun to be felt in the events side of our department and it’s become apparent that there are too many people on staff. Some of the murmurings have been that either one or both of the princess’ (Tanner and Marissa) would not return. Harry, however, let it slip today that both will indeed resume their positions.
With too many people on staff and not enough revenue coming in, something will have to give. Some of the murmurs travelling down the grapevine are that one of the event-based jobs will be relegated to a more junior role. I can’t imagine either one of the princess’ agreeing to that, but the fireworks could be pretty entertaining.
Last week, a company-wide announcement went out that informed us of new high-level positions that were created to fill a new committee. I’m not really sure how it worked out, but it looks like Mr. G will not be as involved in the project he’s been entrenched in the last few years. The same project whose web site I look after and will be taken off of.
Speaking of the web site, it has pretty much been confirmed that I will no longer be involved with it. A new person will be coming on in a contract basis to take over the web site work. One day last month, Mr. G approached me asking if I’d be willing to take to the person he’d be interviewing for the position. I said that I’d be fine with it. “Ok, great, she’s just in my office,” he said. I didn’t realize he was interviewing that morning, I thought he was asking for a future date.
Needless to say, it wasn’t a pleasant experience for me. I wasn’t prepared and I wasn’t overly thrilled about the prospect of not only meeting the person who’d be taking over my favourite task, but explaining the job to her. I felt pretty deflated after that meeting, but it was out of my hands. It was up to me to make the best of things and look outside if things get really boring for me.
As for these mysterious changes that people have been grumbling about, it sounds like there’ll be some impact on me. There’s an all-day seminar taking place next week; a social media “expert” is coming in to talk to our organization. John, my boss’ boss, has e-mailed me and requested my attendance at the seminar. This was surprising because no one else at my level (especially in my department) has been invited. As far as I know, the only people invited are from the organization are at a higher level than mine.
I know that the company wants to start using social networking sites (Facebook and Twitter especially) to tap into available markets to us. I think I’ve been asked to attend because it’s known that I have an interest in web stuff and I’m well versed in things like Twitter. I’m not going to speculate too much on what my attendance at the seminar means, but I know it’ll bring about change for me.
I think the next four-five weeks are going to prove interesting.

Is your boss a complete dick? Sounds like it.
Hope good things are around the corner for you.
Is your boss a complete dick?
Truth be told, he’s really not. He’s awkward, weird, cheap and can often get on my nerves (especially when I’m PMSing) but in the grand scheme of things, he’s a really decent guy.
Just yesterday, Charlie at work was telling me about her boss and he’s a true asshole. Always dumping his work onto her desk, circumventing her and then leaving her to clean up his messes. She’s so stressed, she’s looking at apply for sick leave.
I hate being blind-sided like that. Sorry to hear that…
Hopefully, by including you in the social networking media stuff, that means that your future involves extra web-based tasks.
I’m not going to give it too much thought because I’d hate to get my hopes up just to find out they’ve changed their mind about using the social stuff.
I am browsing job boards though; I figure it can’t hurt to see what’s out there.
