Last night, I was just about asleep. I was drifting towards the land of dreams and was more asleep than awake. “Liz!” S whispered.

“What?” I asked, now fully awake.

“I think someone’s knocking on our door,” she said.

I strained to listen but all I could concentrate on was the sound of my breathing. “They’re knocking very lightly, I think they might be knocking on the neighbour’s door.” We stayed quiet for a few more minutes, the sound of the puppy snoring the only noticeable noise.

“Do you hear it now?” I asked unsure if it had happened again and I’d missed it.

“No,” she replied.

Seconds later, S was back to sleep as if there had never been a disturbance. I, on the other hand, tossed and turned for over an hour trying to drift back to my previous state. I lay there listening to the sound of S and the pup’s breathing. I should’ve clubbed her over the head.
