One gay gals' musings and observations while travelling on the streetcar
“See, we must really like you”
Friday was the day of “should have been’s.” Allow me to explain. First, a few of us gals were going to go out to lunch together. The girls wanted to treat me to a birthday lunch. I told them it wasn’t necessary, but they insisted. These aren’t the event princesses from the other side of the floor, these are girls I actually like.
Natalie, who’s been fighting a sinus infection for two months, came in looking like her head was going to roll off of her neck. She hadn’t slept very much, she had bags under her eyes, her hair was disheveled, it was not a pretty scene. Marigold, who hadn’t slept all night because of a painful cold sore she in her eyelid, came in looking like she had a severe case of pink eye.
“See, we must really like you,” Natalie said as she and Marigold walked into my work space.
“Why are you two even here?” I asked looking at the sad state of their faces.
“Its your birthday lunch, Liz,” Marigold said.
“You’re nuts!” I replied.
We moved lunch up half an hour so that Marigold could make it to her doctor’s to have her eye checked. About ten minutes before we were to leave, Larry came to me with an urgent request. There was something that had to be posted to our web site and it had to be posted ASAP. Using any other system, this request would have taken five minutes. But using our pre-historic software? It was going to take me a while. I e-mailed the gals and told them lunch would have to be postponed. I felt like such an ass, both Marigold and Natalie came in even though they felt horrible because they didn’t want to miss lunch. And then I had to go and postpone it. I was none too happy about it. The change that should have taken a few minutes ended up taking an hour. I was not a happy camper; I was looking forward to a nice lunch with the girls but instead I grabbed a burger at the food court by myself.
The second “should have” instance of the day came at the end of the day. I was supposed to meet Bob to discuss the web site he wanted and to receive the first payment installment. Natalie and I ventured over to the subway together as I was off to meet Bob and she was off to do some shopping. Upon getting into the subway station, I checked my phone. There was a text message, from Bob. It said that he would have to cancel because of an emergency.
I was a bit miffed about the meeting being cancelled. I had been looking forward to getting started on the site and to getting paid too. I haven’t heard from Bob since that text message on Friday. Something (common sense perhaps?) tells me that I won’t be hearing from him again.
I’m not going to stress it. I have other things on the go and I’ll use the current site I look after to practice and try out new things. In time, I’ll have clients and get my portfolio going. In the interim, I want to look into taking some Flash/ActionScript courses. There’s a lot to learn out there and I want to really get a good, solid foundation in Flash. I mentioned to Larry about wanting to learn Flash and he was all for it. (Translation: work will pay for whatever courses I take. Cha-Ching!)
So…anyone out there need a web site?
