The setting: In our basement the other night. S and I were seated on the futon watching TV. S called the little head over to sit in the space between us.

With the pup facing her, S began, “I want to tell you something.”

The pup cocked her head as if to say, “What is it, Momma?”

“I just wanted to tell you,” S started again, “that I like you. And do you know why I like you?”

Another angling of the head from the pup.

“I like you,” S said pointing at her own chest, “Because you have blonde eyelashes.” She completed her sentence by pointing at the gal pal. “And I don’t know anyone else that has blonde eyelashes, so that makes you special.”

It was both the cutest and oddest moment I’ve experienced in a while. The gal pal seemed a bit confused by it all. I’m sure when she came over to the couch she was expecting a treat. Or at least an invite to accompany S out for a smoke.

S was adorable as ever though, talking to the gal pal in her soft I’m your Momma voice. S can get a reaction out of the pup like no one else. Sometimes I think it’s because they’ve been in each others lives for so long. Mostly I think it’s because they share a brain.
