Wine, Philosophy, Gender Identity and More Wine

28 Dec

Even though I was really dreading it, last night wasn’t all that bad. We had my friend M and her boyfriend D over for dinner. M can be quite caustic and negative and so we were expecting to hear plenty of snide comments about the house and us too.

After being inside for a grand total of three minutes, M said, “wow, the kitchen looks just like it did the last time I was here – cluttered.” In her next breath, she followed that up with “your house is in such a desolate area.” (This coming from the girl who’s packing it all in and moving to a city with a population of less than a million people and where the neighbours ask, “where you out of?”)

S took one for the team and did most of the entertaining/chatting while I kept to the kitchen getting dinner ready.

The consumption of two and a half bottles of wine and a six pack of Keiths led to some interesting conversation. M seemed to get very heated as our conversation turned onto the topics of gender identity and sexual orientation. She was pulling out her philosophical theories and I just sat twirling my wine. I think M wanted more of a reaction from S and I, but neither one of us put forth much of an argument. S was tired and my head was a bit cloudy from the wine.

Around 1:30, I called them a cab and they were on their way a few minutes after. While getting ready for bed, S filled me in on the conversations she and M had while smoking outside and it turns out those were even weirder than the ones we were having inside. S really took a few for the team last night.

As mentioned above, M is moving to a city about an hour’s drive away so we’ll probably see even less of each other than we do now. Time has changed the dynamics of our friendship, we’re not as close as we once were and I don’t think we’ll be at that point again.

M and D are coming by tomorrow to pick up some shelving that we’re giving them. After that, I’m not sure when I’ll next see M. I don’t yet know how I feel about that.
