One gay gals' musings and observations while travelling on the streetcar
Antics on the Hill
I’m totally confused. The last I checked, this was Canada, the true north strong and free. We had our due processes and things like elections where we you know, we elected politicians into office. Which is why I don’t understand this coalition government business. Don’t get me wrong, I still fucking hate Stephen Harper and I am in no way defending him. I would love to see someone else be Prime Minister of this country, but I would rather it be done through legitimate channels and not because the opposition decided to join together in back door meetings to form shady versions of government.
Stephane Dion (hapless idiot that he is) lost the election we had just under two months ago. Canadians didn’t feel like he was the right person to lead our country but now he’s going to be Prime Minister because of some hastily thought out “coalition” government? Of course, this will only be until May when the Liberals decide on a new leader. What is this, musical chairs with the Prime Minister’s seat?
Is this coalition government idea even constitutional? Governor General Michaëlle Jean can put a stop to this. She can absolve parliament and call another election. While wildly unpopular, it is the right thing to do. We didn’t elect these officials so that they could play games to gain power. The purpose of having confidence votes (which is likely to happen next week) is to force an election to decide on a new government. Not to go running to the Governor General with a free pass to 24 Sussex Drive.
I know that Stephen Harper brought this onto himself. Instead of putting focus onto the economy, he came out swinging by undermining the opposition’s ability to compete in the next election. It just shows that he’s a shit leader; he always has been and he had no right being re-elected. As we all know though, we as voters did not have much choice. Regardless of the fact that Stephen Harper has no right to be Prime Minister, it still doesn’t condone the opposition parties circumventing the proper channels of an election.
That’s like McCain and Palin showing up in February with a bunch of their goons and kicking Obama out of the White House. That would never happen – and it shouldn’t happen here. We’re a modern country, with modern laws and processes. If the current government is to be defeated, a new legitimate government must be chosen through an election – a fundamental freedom of this country.
We are treading on dangerous territory here. At a time when we need stability and strong leadership, we as citizens are being put aside for personal gain. It is us as citizens who have the most to lose and it is us who will bear the brunt of this mistake.
