I think I’m probably the only homo out here in the blogosphere who disagrees with this week’s settlement that eHarmony now has to offer same-sex personals because they were sued. Apparently, Eric McKinley was “shocked” that he wasn’t able to get past the first screen because there was no option for men seeking men. eHarmony has said that they will launch their new site, Compatible Partners, in March of next year.

I don’t think Mr. McKinley was shocked by it, I thought he saw that and thought he found a way to get his name in print and a quick buck made. Why was it so shocking that eHarmony wasn’t offering same-sex personals? Especially when there are plenty of gay web sites that offer the services Mr. McKinley was looking for. Did he really have to sue? Could he not have just typed “www.gay.com” in his browser’s address bar and tried his luck there?

This whole thing seems rather idiotic to me. Yes, I know, we’re all looking for equality. But guess what? Equality means just that, the same for everyone. So what will happen now if a heterosexual decides to sue gay.com or Planet Out for not offering opposite-sex personals? Will they have to go to litigation and create new sites as well just because someone decided they’d like to try their hand at the equalization game?

There are more important battles to fight when looking for equality. I wonder what Mr. McKinley has done in the fight for same-sex marriage? Or if he’s challenged his employer to offer benefit packages to their partnered homosexual employees? Or if he’s ever gotten involved with his local GLBT center?

Everyone’s always looking for their fifteen minutes of fame. Maybe this McKinley fellow thinks he’ll be remembered as a hero for getting big bad eHarmony to offer same-sex personals. I think he’s a jackass who has made an idiot of himself and tarnished everyone else who is fighting for the equality that matters.
