“But I’m reading”

18 Nov

The Scene: Our main living area in the house.

The time: Just after 10 pm.

The Setting: We were both sitting on the couch, I was reading a book and S was watching Samantha Who? on her laptop.

Out of nowhere, she handed me an ear bud and gestured that I put it in my ear. I gave her a look that said, “What am I supposed to do with that?”

“Put it in your ear,” she said.

“But I’m reading,” I countered, looking down to the book in my lap to make sure it was still there.

“Watch this with me,” she said coyly.

“But I’m reading right now,” I repeated.

“I want you to watch this with me, it’s funny,” she replied, nudging the ear bud closer to me.

Slowly, I closed the book and placed the headphone into my right ear. “Not in that one,” she said, “the other ear.”

Because I just can’t say no to S, I obliged and we sat and enjoyed two episodes together. It was a really cozy way to end our day together.

I’m glad S. tore you away from that book. I read it — I had to for my book club — and believe me I would have preferred to have watch television sitcoms. In fact, I would have preferred to sit alone in front of a broken computer.

Did you really find it that bad?

I’m about 60 pages in and am liking it so far. Perhaps that will change as I read on. Usually, the books I end up really liking are the ones that take me awhile to get into. The Poisonwood Bible is a perfect example of that.
