While our attention here in Canada of late has been on the election that wrapped up last week, there is something happening down in California that I think all us homo’s need to be aware of. For some reason, which I don’t really understand, the people of California are being given the chance to vote on a piece of legislation which would effectively nullify the rights of  gays and lesbians to marry. The same right the supreme court granted just a few months ago. Why the supreme court decision isn’t final, is beyond the understanding of this Canadian ‘mo.

From what I’ve been seeing in blogs and polls, the pro-prop 8 folks have raised a huge amount of money – $10 million more than the no folks.

This type of vote scares me. I can see Stephen Harper pulling something similar here. Although, I doubt he’d even put it to a vote, he would just take away our rights without a second thought. Thankfully, he only has a minority government. Its hard to believe that the right to marry is something that even has to be legislated or granted by courts. Being given the right only to have it taken away months later is beyond ridiculous, especially in a country as developed as the United States.

Today was the launch of the 8 against 8 campaign. 8 lesbian bloggers (who I believe all live in California) have launched the campaign in the hopes of raising awareness and donations for the no folks. This vote is important, not just to the people of California, but for all of us.

The 8 bloggers are:

If you can and wish to donate, you may do so at the 8 against 8 web site.
