Duct!

29 Oct

Since moving in, S and I have embarked on quite the home maintenance journey. This past Saturday we had an appointment to get our ducts cleaned. This was in addition to having our furnace cleaned three weeks prior. What can I say, we’re some clean bitches.

I had never been witness to the process that is duct cleaning. S and I were both expecting one guy to show up with a vacuum and do his thing. What we got instead was not one, not two, but three guys show up at our door with a long ass vacuum hose and several other hoses that they ran throughout the house. I lead them down to the basement to show them where the furnace was and was asked by Duct Cleaning Guy#1 if I had a cat. Coincidentally, Sophie had snuck down stairs at that moment and helped me answer his question. “You may want to remove her, ma’am, as our vacuum is quite powerful.”

8 against 8

20 Oct

While our attention here in Canada of late has been on the election that wrapped up last week, there is something happening down in California that I think all us homo’s need to be aware of. For some reason, which I don’t really understand, the people of California are being given the chance to vote on a piece of legislation which would effectively nullify the rights of  gays and lesbians to marry. The same right the supreme court granted just a few months ago. Why the supreme court decision isn’t final, is beyond the understanding of this Canadian ‘mo.

From what I’ve been seeing in blogs and polls, the pro-prop 8 folks have raised a huge amount of money – $10 million more than the no folks.

This type of vote scares me. I can see Stephen Harper pulling something similar here. Although, I doubt he’d even put it to a vote, he would just take away our rights without a second thought. Thankfully, he only has a minority government. Its hard to believe that the right to marry is something that even has to be legislated or granted by courts. Being given the right only to have it taken away months later is beyond ridiculous, especially in a country as developed as the United States.

Today was the launch of the 8 against 8 campaign. 8 lesbian bloggers (who I believe all live in California) have launched the campaign in the hopes of raising awareness and donations for the no folks. This vote is important, not just to the people of California, but for all of us.

The 8 bloggers are:

If you can and wish to donate, you may do so at the 8 against 8 web site.

Homecoming

17 Oct

I’ve been a terrible blogger, I know. My last entry of any substance was posted weeks ago. I’m sure all (five? four? three?) of my readers have just been chomping at the bit waiting for an update. Well, here it is. Sort of.

Our move into the house has taken up most of my energy. Whatever energy is left has been taken up by work, Sophie the Kamikaze cat and my dad needing surgery on his bum shoulder. There’s entirely too much to write about and time is short so here’s the abridged version:
