As mentioned earlier this week, I’m going to the Matchbox Twenty show tonight with S’s friend P. It was decided that it would be easier for everyone (well, mostly her) if she drove into the city this morning (from the ‘burbs) instead of driving there and back after work. So that’s what she did. She stopped in this morning, brought the dog (Bud – the gal pal’s brother) and left her car in the lot outside our place.

She got there just as Little Head and I were getting ready for our walk. I figured I’d take Bud too, so off we went. Unlike Little Head’s leash, which is one of those ones that extends and retracts as she walks, Bud’s is a short one, so he’s often tugging at it. Well, on our way back in, he was tugging so hard on his leash that he was choking. I figured we’d be ok since we were in the lobby so I took them both off of their leashes. Big mistake.

I pressed the up button for the elevator and then an elevator opened; only it was going down to the parking level. Bud ran into that elevator as I shouted for him to get out. As I was trying to get him, the elevator that was going up opened up and Little Head ran into that one. I then turned my attention to trying to get Little Head; as I was yelling for her to come to me, the door closed on Bud and off he went.

I panicked, I didn’t know what to do. If I didn’t hurry, the door was going to close on Little Head so I hopped onto the car she was on and took her upstairs. I pounded on the door and told P to come with me; I’d lost Bud in the elevator. I told her to go to the lobby and stay there because when the elevators aren’t in use, they sit on the lobby level. I then went to each floor, one by one via the stairwell looking to see if he’d gotten off on one of the floors. I was so scared, not that someone would snatch him, but that he was frightened and alone.

After going up to all of the floors, I took the elevator back down. I realized I hadn’t looked in the basement / parking level. So that’s where I headed next. The elevator I was on stopped in on the main floor as people on the elevator were getting off there. When the doors opened onto the lobby, I saw P sitting there with Bud. What a relief!!

Apparently, minutes after I headed upstairs, a lady came up to the lobby from the parking level where she’d found Bud. She had heard my yelling and decided to bring him back up to return him to me. P said he was so scared when the lady brought him back. The poor boy. :( So we all went back to our place and had a laugh about it. By that point, I was covered in sweat as I’d been in my track pants and sweater. S said Little Head had been moaning and yelping the entire time, the poor girl didn’t know what was going on but she wanted to know where the hell we’d all gone to!

What a crazy-ass start to the day.
